Popis: | Growth, feed conversion and carcass traits of 30 Holstein (H) line, 24 crossbred (C) line and 20 Ayrshire-based (A) line steers were compared. Although H and C calves were heavier at birth than A calves, body weights and dimensions at later ages up to 50 wk were similar for the three lines. H steers were superior to A and C steers in feed conversion from 48 wk to slaughter at 450 kg and in ribeye area. C steers had thicker fat cover, lower dressing percent and better overall carcass grades than H or A steers. Carcasses of A steers were less well marbled than those of H or C steers.
