The female reproductive tract organs of eutherian mammals include the oviducts (Fallopian tubes), uterus, cervix, and vagina. The oviduct is the conduit for the transport of oocytes from the ovary to the uterus and the location for fertilization. Preimplantation embryo development occurs in the oviduct and uterus. Subsequently, embryo implantation occurs in the uterus for fetal growth and maturation supported by placental tissues. Birth occurs through the vagina canal. These female tract organs also provide the route and environment for the introduction and maintenance of spermatozoa to meet with the oocytes for fertilization. |
