Popis: A non-aqueous steel-phosphating electrolyte comprising trichloroethylene, phosphoric acid and 1-pentanol has been studied. The phosphating rate and coverage fraction are determined by scanning electron microscopy surface analysis. The coverage fraction increases with time and phosphoric acid concentration. It depends slightly on the type of organic solvent (trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene). The different boiling points of the two solvents account for the differences in the coverage fractions. Phosphating is accelerated by the addition of formic acid, which is accompanied by the formation of phosphoric ester. The coverage fraction rapidly reaches 88%.
