The seven West African countries of the Sahel (Senegal, Gambia, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Chad) are among the poorest in the world. In these countries, per capita income in 1981 averaged just over $300 (U.S. dollars), food intake was below the minimum requirements, falling as low as 1500 calories per day in some locations, and life expectancy was about 44 years (FAO, 1986a; MacDonald, 1986). The GNP growth rate for the region during the 1960–81 period was essentially zero (MacDonald, 1986). |
