Popis: | Much has been written about the physical and neurodevelopmental effects of drug exposure on developing babies, infants, children, and adolescents. Despite the available information, there has been an increase in the use and misuse of legal and illegal drugs, including opioids. Drug use and addiction also places families and their children at greater risk for HIV/AIDS. The stigma associated with drug use, drug exposure and HIV/AIDS adds to the challenges faced by children with such histories. One of these challenges is impaired language and communication skills, including pragmatic language skills. In this chapter, we summarize the current information on the histories of children exposed to HIV and substance abuse. We present four cases to provide examples of such histories and illuminate examples of valid, reliable, culturally sensitive assessment and treatment practices that speech-language pathologists use when working with this population. |
