Extremely intense Raman signals from pyridine adsorbed on single crystals with (111) and (100) orientation and polycrystalline silver electrodes are reported. To obtain these intense Raman signals with an enhancement factor of 10 5 only one carefully controlled oxidation/reduction cycle is necessary. This does not lead to an increase in surface roughness nor to a change in crystalline surface orientation. Different orientations of the silver electrode give characteristic surface adsorption Raman spectra. These differences appear in frequency positions, relative intensities and halfwidths of the Raman bands, as well as in the potential dependences of these spectroscopic data. The observed spectrum is assumed to be the sum over the spectra for the different adsorption sites. |
