Popis: Sorption characteristics of four major constituents of sedimentary rocks — quartz, calcite, kaolinite and bentonite — are studied under undisturbed field conditions in the Coastal Plain Aquifer of Israel. Dynamic interaction of minerals with groundwater is indicated by simultaneous enrichment of minerals with respect to certain metals and depletion with respect to others. The distribution coefficient ( D ) is calculated for Ni, Cu, Cr, Co, Fe, Cd, Mn and Pb over a 2-m depth interval in the upper part of the aquifer. The distribution of Fe, Pb and Ni is governed by the surface properties of the minerals. Cd and Mn show a strong affinity for calcite and may be incorporated into calcite grains. Cu and Cr are most effectively sorbed by kaolinite. The suggested experimental approach may be useful for the study of site-specific contamination with hazardous metals.
