A study has been made of the structure of gels of polyelectrolyte salt complexes, using sodium polystyrenenesulphonate and poly-(1,2-dimethyl-5-vinylpyridinium methylsulphate) as examples. It is shown by optical and electron microscopy that these gels are heterogeneous, consisting of a continuous framework of polymer perforated by interconnected spherical voids. It was found that in cross section films of the gels are anistropic. There is a substantial difference in size between the structural elements of the upper (closest to the precipitant) and lower layers. |
