Popis: In this chapter, we will discuss how enterprise systems change when they are designed for HANA. To use HANA instead of a traditional row-oriented database without any changes to the application code is possible, and does result in some performance improvement. But we should not forget that existing databases also keep a large portion of their data in memory through caching. The performance gains using HANA with existing applications are therefore relatively modest, and it is only the five times lower data footprint from dictionary encoding that justifies keeping all data in memory. To make the leap towards a true real-time enterprise—where sensor data [such as from the Internet of Things (IoT)], unstructured data (from social networks, textual and verbal human interactions, and the like), and structured data (from enterprise systems, genomes, etc) come together and can be processed in real time—requires rethinking and redesigning enterprise applications.
