Ground penetrating radar (GPR) data from the upper 30 meters is used in the interpretation of ERS-1 SAR data from the accumulation area of Finsterwalderbreen (77/spl deg/ 30'N, 15/spl deg/ 20'E), Svalbard. An effective relative backscatter coefficient at the surface is calculated based on the GPR profiles. These profiles are compared with the backscatter coefficients measured by the ERS-1 SAR along the GPR profiles. The results indicates that the SAR penetrates the cold surface layer, but not into the temperate ice. The SAR can distinguish between the superimposed ice zone and the wet snow zone. |
