Popis: Objective: To review the safety and efficacy of pindolol in augmenting the response to antidepressant drugs. Background: Despite a rapidly expanding range of options for the treatment of major depression some cases remain refractory to monotherapy. Pindolol may augment the response to antidepressant drugs by acting as a presynaptic antagonist at 5-HT(1A) receptors. Method: Relevant information was identified by searching the Medline database from 1980 to February 1999 and the Australasian Medical Index. Data were extracted from studies described in the English language literature examining experimental and clinical evidence for the efficacy of pindolol in antidepressant augmentation. Relevant animal research, case reports, open-label studies and placebo-controlled trials were utilised. Conclusions: Pindolol may offer some benefit for treatment-resistant depression. However, limitations of the methodology in some studies make it difficult to interpret the data. Further research is required to elucidate the role of pindolol in the augmentation of antidepressant treatment. (author abstract)
