The article discusses the ability to define such concepts as: beauty – ugliness, happiness – unhappiness, love – hate, wisdom – stupidity by an adult with mild intellectual disability. In order to describe the meaning of a word, the cognitive methodology was chosen, which is particularly applicable in studying the abilities of intellectually disabled persons in the area of understanding (conceptualizing) concepts because it enables the presentation of how a patient in whom cognitive functions have developed somewhat differently interprets the world in his/her characteristic way, and what type of knowledge organized in the form of cognitive representation s/he uses to establish the meaning of a word. The lexical material was collected during a natural conversation because we take the view that “language works” only during conversation because the content is continuously “negotiated, processed, and created”. |
