We analyzed how a young Czech university, the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně in Usti nad Labem, deals with some of the tensions stemming from its location in the peripheral Usti Region, characterized by low levels of educational attainment. The university has had difficulty attracting enough quality applicants, and so its faculties have networked with primary and secondary schools in the region to provide information to young people and motivate them to continue their education. To overcome the shortage of highly qualified academics needed to meet the demanding requirements of accreditation, both existing and newly created academic networks are used. The structure and efficiency of these networks and their connection tensions derived from the ambiguities of intention, structure, and history of the university are analyzed. |
