An irradiation facility is presented which allows the simulation of loading conditions in plasma facing structural alloys. At the Dual Beam Facility of KfK alpha-particles (≤ 104 MeV) and protons (≤ 40 MeV) are focussed onto a common specimen. A recent extension with an universal testing machine in the focus of both beams allows not only the simulation of fusion neutrons by a systematic variation of the hydrogen, the helium and the irradiation damage, but also reactor typical mechanical loadings in the specimens of relevant thickness. The ranges of application and the capabilities of this facility are outlined. First strain controlled in-beam fatigue experiments in specimens, made of the tempered 12 % Cr-steel MANET, have been performed at 450°C with total strain amplitudes between 0.5 and 1.0 %. The observed fatigue life and the irradiation effects will be discussed and compared with earlier results on conventional postirradiation fatigue tests. |
