The UK pathway for cataracts is either via the National Health Service (a universal health care system) or private. The private care pathway offers patients the choice of premium lens implants, such as toric and presbyopic lenses allowing for greater spectacle independence. Healthcare systems worldwide show variance from this pattern. Premium lens implants require specific consultation for patient suitability and vision expectations. Monovision is also an option which does not require a premium lens implant and can be considered at initial consultation. Premium lens insertion requires pre-operative counselling and post-surgical re-evaluation but, in some cases, there are unhappy post-operative patients. This chapter expands on six common causes at fault in an unhappy premium cataract surgery patient and discusses further treatment options for an unhappy post-operative patient. |
