Laparoscopy for placement of ventriculoperitoneal shunts (VPS), management of VPS complications, and for other indications in patients with existing VPS is safe and effective. This chapter will focus on the current recommendations for laparoscopic-assisted placement of VPS, either primary or redo, as well as the use of laparoscopy for the management of complications associated with VPS. The literature regarding the safety of laparoscopy for other conditions in patients with existing VPS will also be reviewed. Epidemiology, pathophysiology, and preoperative evaluation will be discussed for congenital and acquired hydrocephalus as well as for complications of VPS. Laparoscopic techniques for placing VPS and managing distal complications and alternatives such as ventriculogallbladder shunts will be presented. A comprehensive list of references is included. |
