SILVEIRA, S.A da. Oral manifestations in leprosy: a scope review. 2023, 80f. Dissertation in Integrated Dental Sciences. - University of Cuiabá, Cuiabá, 2023. Leprosy is a chronic granulomatous infectious disease caused by an acid-resistant bacillus, Mycobacterium leprae, of slow growth, which has specific tropism for the skin, peripheral nerves and mucous membranes, mainly in the transmission routes, and may also affect other organs, such as the liver, testes, eyes and oral mucosa. The objective of this work was to map the scientific evidence related to the characteristics of oral manifestations in leprosy. This is a scope review, carried out following that of the “Joanna Briggs Institute” (JBI). The search for studies was carried out in the PUBMED, LILACS, EMBASE, WEB OF SCIENCE, SCOPUS and INFOLEP databases. 2037 articles were found, among which, after selection, 29 were included in this review. The year of publication varied between 1969 and 2021, most articles (N=12) were found in the PUBMED database and the predominant type of study was case report (N=12) followed by cross-sectional study (N=9) . This review identified that leprosy can affect the oral mucosa, with the most common sites being: tongue, hard palate, soft palate, gingiva, oral mucosa, uvula and lips. The types of lesions vary between: nodules, ulcers, fissures, erythema, hyperpigmentation and whitish plaques, in patients with Virchowian leprosy, followed by Tuberculoid and Indeterminate. The age range of these patients ranged from 8 to 88 years, with most cases being male. The oral manifestations of leprosy have a direct impact on their quality of life, coexistence in society and difficulty of acceptance related to self-image. The literature is still scarce and more robust studies are needed for a better evaluation of oral manifestations. From the mapping of scientific evidence, we identified that the literature is still scarce and more robust studies are needed to better assess oral manifestations, since they directly impact the quality of life and coexistence in society of individuals affected by the disease. |
