The purpose of this project is to examine the link between cannabis use and mental health during the transition into adulthood. There are competing arguments concerning the relationship between cannabis and health, especially as it relates to mental health. We add to previous research examining mental health and cannabis use using the National Longitudinal Study of Youth 1997 cohort (NLSY97). NLSY97 contains many potential cofounders of mental health and cannabis use including social and behavioral cofounders. Using multinomial regression we examine the extent that social, economic, school, and family environment, as well as other substance abuse account for the relationship between mental health and cannabis use. Additionally, using fixed effects models we examine whether cannabis use is associated with mental health during the transition to adulthood net of other substance use. |
