Ultrasound is increasingly recognised for its value in the assessment of bowel pathology. With the increasing speed and sensitivity of modern multi-slice CT, there is no doubt that the diagnostic potential of CT has increased significantly, but with an increase in radiation dose. For young patients who require repeated assessments of their inflammatory bowel disease non-radiation techniques such as ultrasound are of particular value. In addition, as colitis frequently presents in young people as a non-specific abdominal and pelvic complaint, the first imaging test obtained is frequently an ultrasound scan. Therefore, it is important for the sonographer to take a general overview of the abdomen and pelvis and be able to recognise bowel pathology when it is present. |
