Popis: The real-world transportation system is complex in nature, composed of various elements, which are mutually interacting in a non-linear way such as roadway infrastructure, traffic-flow management, traffic composition, signal control and local conditions. Any trigger in these elements causes frequent interruptions and congestions leading to substantial increase in commuting time, fuel intake and vehicular exhaust emission. The study focused on the potential cause and consequences of traffic congestion, its estimation and also encompassed comprehensive discussion on mitigation strategies implemented to combat the emission in developing countries. Traffic congestion leads to adverse impact on society and environment both in term of climate change, disease burden and economic loss. There is plethora of studies, thoroughly analysed each element of transportation, but for the effective mitigation, knowledge on the association of these elements and their consequences is essential. Therefore, this study has reviewed the state–of–art bibliographies and observed some research gaps which are necessary to address for optimum policy benefits, hence our study synthesizes future directions of research based on comprehensive review of roadway transportation. We expect that this information will be valuable for assessment of environmental benefit in any scheme or policy of transport sector.
