Popis: The orbital mosaic of Sorex araneus Linnaeus, 1758 is studied using absorption contrast µCT and phase contrast synchrotron microradiography of a macerated museum skull as well as the classic approach of examining serial sections of a juvenile specimen. Due to complete fusion of the bones in the orbita, the radiography approaches fail to identify the sutures of the orbital mosaic but phase contrast microradiography revealed reorganization of skull bones that is known to be linked to the seasonal reduction of body weight. Reconstruction of the lateral aspect of the skull from the serial sections shows an ethmoid exposure in the orbit that prevents frontopalatine contact, whereas the orbital wing of the maxillary is small.
