Gene therapy has great potential for the treatment of a wide spectrum of genetic, neoplastic, and infectious diseases (Anderson, 1992; Miller, 1992). Advances in recombinant DNA and PCR technologies have significantly facilitated the identification of functional genes which cause, promote, control, or correct a variety of diseases. Gene transfer techniques must now be developed which can efficiently deliver candidate therapeutic genes into target somatic tissues where their therapeutic effects can be evaluated. |
