1. 1. Juvenile Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, were acclimated to high (35‰) and low (3.5‰) salinity water and then exposed to an abrupt salinity change to either 3.5 or 35‰. 2. 2. Changes in osmotic pressure and concentrations of sodium, potassium, chloride, and free amino acids in blood serum and axial muscle were measured for up to a week following the abrupt salinity changes. 3. 3. The greatest immediate changes occurred in the serum taken from fish transferred from 35 to 3.5‰. 4. 4. Changes in the osmotic components of muscle paralleled those in the serum, but involved primarily potassium. 5. 5. Changes in the individual free amino acids and ninhydrin-positive substance in the muscle were minor, and were relevant only in those fish transferred from 35 to 3.5‰. |
