Popis: | This equation of self-esteem with equality of goods is forcefully attacked by Nozick in his Anarchy, State, and Utopia. Nozick claims that self-esteem is based on how one fares in competition with others on the dimensions that a society values (i.e., income, beauty, intelligence). Equalizing one dimension, say income, will merely result in another assuming greater importance.2 Is Nozick right? In this note I will consider the relationship between self-esteem and equality. I will also consider two other strategies that have been put forward for advancing individual self-esteem in a liberal society: decreasing the emphasis on abilities in general and encouraging independence from the valuation of others.3 |
