Popis: Data acquired from sensors such as those from LiDAR devices contain a large set of data points per unit area. These data sets are multidimensional in nature and correspond to features on the topographic region often obtained from laser sensors as point cloud returns. These data returns can help to identify spatial features on the earth surface. Segmenting and extracting regions into land, vegetation and water bodies such as rivers, lakes, and ponds from these multidimensional topographic point clouds is a challenging problem. It is found that LiDAR returns vary according to the surface composition and gives high returns for hard solid and opaque features to low or minimal returns for soft water bodies. This paper explores the relevance and applicability of using spatial morphology-based approach to extract regions of water bodies in the study area. The results suggest that spatial morphological model helps us to identify and extract progressively regions of water bodies or its immediate influence regions. The results are encouraging with high accuracy up to 98.96% in detecting and extracting water bodies within their spatial setups.
