Humanistic and existential counseling may be viewed as both phenomenological and holistic in their approach to group counseling. The basic tenets suggest that human behaviors are based both in the group members' insight related to their reality and the values and attitudes attached to that perception. This chapter examines person-centered and existential group counseling and psychotherapy approaches and how each represents these philosophical views. Humanistic approaches to group counseling generally stress the importance of congruence in human interactions, recognize the effect of personal experiences, and highlights the formation of personal and interpersonal consciousness. The humanistic theories emphasize personal responsibility for one's life choices rather than considering them a product of heredity or environment. The course of humanistic groups is determined by the group members, so leaders are generally less directive than in many other approaches to group work. The humanistic group leader places great value on being genuine in the counseling relationship. |
