Popis: Gas analysis is a powerful tool in diagnosing the internal conditions of SF6 insulated equipment. Results of the analysis can be used to alert maintenance personnel for the formation of excessive toxic and corrosive byproducts in the equipment. Although many analysis techniques have been developed, they lack the required sensitivity and the capability of in-situ measurements to detect the formation of specific discharge byproducts in arcs, sparks and corona. This paper describes a gas diagnostics technique to detect discharge products in low concentrations by high resolution infrared absorption spectroscopy. S2F10 and SOF2 in sparked SF6 have been observed by the infrared technique in the region of 825 cm-1 and 808 cm-1 respectively, thus confirming the observations by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The applicability of infrared techniques for GIS diagnostics in the field is discussed.
