The results are presented of a study of serum-antithrombin-3 levels in 20 women taking oral contraceptives vs. 19 controls 20 menopausal women taking conjugated equine estrogen (Premarin) vs. 20 menopausal controls and 29 women in the third trimester of pregnancy. Antithrombin-3 levels were significantly lowered in the pregnant women and in the women taking combined oral contraceptives (p less than .001). The administration of Premarin had no effect on antithrombin-3 levels. The lowered levels in pregnant women are presumably due to the production of natural estrogen. It is suggested that reduced antithrombin-3 levels may be relevant to the occurrence of thrombosis and that the substitution of natural estrogens for synthetics may minimize the risk of thrombosis. |
