This paper describes the design, fabrication, and test of a series of internally pressurized, metallined composite pressure vessels. Interply hybrids of S-2 glass, Kevlar 49, and carbon fibers were utilized to obtain an actual burst pressure of 50,000 psi. A plane strain analysis of thickwalled orthotropic cylinders, which was used to size the cylindrical portion of the vessels, is presented. The demonstration vessels utilized a thin aluminum liner with a unique boss design which made fabrication of an efficient vessel possible. Special laminate designs were required to withstand the high transverse compressive stresses. Vessel performances and strain gage data are compared with analytical predict ions. Nomenclature |
