Popis: Investigations in a 51-year old female patient suffering from severe tenesmus and therapy resistant diarrhoea led to a diagnosis of pneumatosis cystoides coli. After 4 days of treatment with continuous oxygen breathing there was dramatic clinical improvement and an incomplete radiological remission. This new method is an important step forward in the treatment of pneumatosis coli. The only potential side effect is pulmonary oxygen toxicity. Thus limitation of oxygen treatment to the shortest time necessary for abolishing symptoms is recommended. Oxygen breathing is a safe, simple and effective treatment of pneumatosis coli and may replace the currently performed surgical resection of the involved intestinal segments.
