Victims of human trafficking play key roles in the investigation and prosecution of traffickers; however, their involvement in the interview process and the information they disclose largely depend on the quality of their interactions with investigators. Victims of trafficking represent a complex and challenging subset of victims for reasons that include their strained relationship with the police, their variable cooperation with law enforcement, and their personal needs and characteristics (Lavoie et al., 2019). The proposed white paper will be a comprehensive review of the current research on interviewing potential human trafficking victims – including research on their identification, meeting their psychosocial needs, and fostering their cooperation with law enforcement – as well as promising strategies for eliciting accurate and plentiful information consistent with principles of memory, trauma response, and a victim-centered approach. The review will inform the development of guidance for law enforcement agencies to identify and interview potential victims of human sex trafficking.
