Popis: | The insertion of a saturable absorber in a laser resonator sustaining a fundamental mode of gaussian shape is shown to create an apodizing element with a nearly gaussian transmittance. A simple analysis predicts that such an element has little effect on the beam waist of a stable resonator, but leads to a significant narrowing of the beam produced by an unstable resonator equipped with a variable reflectivity mirror. Experimental results obtained with a Nd:YAG laser confirm the prediction. |
