With the recent decriminalization or legalization of cannabis in many parts of the world, the usage of cannabis among people with various medical conditions, such as epilepsy, has been garnering increasing interest. Although much of recent research efforts have been dedicated to the role of medical cannabis in treating epilepsy, the importance of recreational/non-medical cannabis (NMC) consumption in people with epilepsy (PWE) has not been as well described. Nevertheless, some studies report a high prevalence of NMC consumers in PWE. This is a particular problem as NMC may not have the same anti-seizure effects as cannabidiol (CBD, the main component of medical cannabis) and may rather have harmful effects on mental health. In this project, we seek to conduct a scoping review on NMC usage in PWE. This scoping review will aim to summarize the nature, extent, and range of the available research on the subject, identify relevant knowledge gaps, and offer recommendations for future research. |
