The present study examined fear of weight gain among females reporting the maladaptive eating pattern of bulimia and those reporting a normative pattern. Fifteen bulimics and 15 normal-controls matched for age, sex, physical makeup, and imagery capacity were exposed to two imaginal scenes: one depicting a neutral situation, the other depicting a weight gain of 5 Ib. Subjective, motoric, and physiological measures of responding were collected. As predicted, bulimics and normal-controls were similar in their reactions to the neutral image and divergent in their reactions to the weight-gain one, with bulimics displaying more prounced activity across the three response systems. The findings as a whole support both the validity of the fear of weight-gain notion and the paradigm developed to assess the construct. Implications for the assessment and treatment of bulimia are discussed. |
