Popis: In the early 1940’s railroads started using wear metal analysis for maintenance control of diesel locomotives. By the mid-1950’s the Navy was employing the technique for aircraft maintenance. During the 1960’s equipment manufacturers started developing emission spectrographs specifically designed to analyze lubricating oils for wear metals. More recently a great deal of interest has been shown in developing emission spectrographs capable of performing very accurate and reproducible low level analysis of wear metals. Not surprising, the instrument manufacturers discovered as they sought to tighten the tolerances on the spectrographs that the quality and properties of the spectrographic electrodes employed affected the precision and accuracy of the equipment. During this time we became interested in evaluating spectrographic electrodes for their performance characteristics in wear metal analysis. We became further involved with this effort when the government required that each lot of electrodes sold be certified against a standard lot which they had selected as being particularly good.
