Virtual reality can be used as an alternative simulation environment for immersive and engaging problem-based learning scenarios. In this chapter, the authors specifically discuss computer-based virtual reality (VR) simulation, though many and varied peripheral devices might be used to access the virtual environment. The chapter begins with an introduction to virtual reality as a teaching strategy for healthcare education, including a brief summary of supportive learning theory. Several advantages of VR simulation will be pointed out and some of the caveats in virtual scenario development. The chapter will conclude with a practical approach to the development of case-based learning in a virtual environment and place the approach within the broader institutional and extramural context. |
