It was apparent in this workshop that the scientific community has not yet reached a consensus concerning a microscopic theory for the high-T c cuprates. The BCS theory assumes a model of free electrons plus a pairing interaction; it contains the essential physics necessary to understand conventional superconductors (SC’s). However, few theorists (if any) will claim that this simple three-dimensional free-electron model contains the essential physics of the high-T c cuprates. Much controversy still surrounds the question which theoretical model is most appropriate. And even for a given model, there is often disagreement about the validity of the various methods of approximation. |
