Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a common and benign problem, yet it can have an enormous effect on an individual’s quality of life and ability to work. One in five people in the UK receive incapacity benefits because of chronic musculoskeletal pain, representing a considerable economic burden to society. In this chapter, the role of non-medical approaches will be discussed in treating people with long-term pain. The emphasis on management is not only to relieve pain, but also to reduce disability. |
