Popis: 1. A new thermodynamic theory of adsorption equilibrium was proposed, based on the application of the thermodynamics of solutions to a universal model of a vacancy solution, corresponding to equilibrium of the gas phase with a solid. 2. The application of the general expression for the chemical potential of the components of a surface solution to a vacancy solution and the establishment of a far-reaching thermodynamic analogy between adsorption and osmotic equilibria yielded a general equation for the “surface pressure,” applicable to any adsorption systems. 3. By introducing a nonthermodynamic premise, substantiated by extensive experimental material, of independence of the osmotic coefficient of a vacancy solution from the value of the adsorption within a broad range of fillings, an equation of the adsorption isotherm, applicable to a very broad group of adsorption systems, was obtained. 4. A linear dependence of the osmotic coefficient on the reciprocal of the temperature was established, and on the basis of this the entire thermodynamics of adsorption equilibrium for a very widespread case of systems of the type under consideration was obtained. 5. The proposed theory is in full agreement with the basic properties of adsorption equilibrium. In particular, it gives a quantitatively correct dependence of the adsorption equilibrium on the temperatures.
