Popis: | In a cylindrical, plasma-filled waveguide, the fast Alfven mode with the lowest waveguide cutoff frequency or density is the first radial m=+1 mode, where m is the azimuthal mode number. If the plasma is surrounded by a vacuum or low density region, the situation is more complicated. The dispersion properties of positive m modes are particularly sensitive to changes in the edge density profile. It is shown that, at frequencies above the ion cyclotron frequency, first radial positive m modes propagate as surface waves even in plasmas without a well-defined surface. High m>0 modes are guided along steady magnetic field lines at the plasma edge and are therefore potentially very dangerous from an edge heating point of view in ICRF experiments. The results indicate that most fast wave cavity modes, previously observed in small Tokamak devices, have been surface wave modes. |
