Flight control surfaces are essential to the safe operation of commercial aircraft. This chapter details the events of United Flight 232, a three-engine DC-10 aircraft flying between Denver and Philadelphia, with a planned stop in Chicago. However, before reaching Chicago, the tail-mounted engine suffered a catastrophic failure that resulted in the loss of all three hydraulic systems. The loss of hydraulic pressure resulted in the inability to operate any flight control surface. The plane attempted to land in Sioux City Iowa, but the difficulty in controlling the aircraft without any hydraulic pressure produced a significant landing accident. |
