In an ongoing project, the aim is to erect a lab-scale moving bed temperature-swing reactor (MBTSA) that can be operated continuously capturing carbon dioxide at ambient pressure from post-combustion and industrial sources. In this paper we describe the background assumptions made for designing the setup. The design is mainly based on the knowledge gained from initial process modelling and the typical characteristics of potential powder-based adsorbents to be used in the MBTSA process; working CO2 adsorption capacities, CO2/N2 adsorption selectivity, hydrophilicity of the adsorbent, and their thermal properties. The main challenges are discussed, and the design chosen for construction is briefly described. The setup is at present under construction and is planned to be commissioned and finalized early in 2019. |
