This chapter provides an understanding of the disease of pain, as well as recent and future trends in pain research and standard of care treatment. An overview is provided of the different classifications of pain, and the current unmet medical need. This is followed by a summary of the approaches undertaken in pain research and the changes in regulatory, commercial and payer environments that have shaped the arena for the delivery of novel pain analgesics over the last decade. Finally this chapter provides a summary of novel approaches to pain research and development now being undertaken, with a greater focus on human understanding of disease, to address some of the challenges that have impeded delivery of novel analgesics over the last decade and ensure greater success in the future. An overview of the resulting emerging new mechanisms is also provided. |
