Popis: Four experiments were conducted using Bobwhite quail chicks to determine the effect of time lapse between hatching and placement of chicks in brooders with feed and water upon performance to five weeks of age. Quail chicks that hatched on or before the 23rd day of the experiment (23rd day after the eggs were set) were randomly divided into two groups: one group was placed on feed and water immediately and the second was placed back in the incubator until the 25th day in Experiments 1 and 2 and the 24th day in Experiments 3 and 4. This same process was repeated with chicks hatched on the 24th day in the first two experiments. All chicks were brooded until day 60 in Experiments 1 and 2 and day 59 in Experiments 3 and 4. Chicks placed on feed and water on the day of hatching were generally heavier on the next day and after seven days than those held in the incubator after hatching. At the end of the experiments, however, no differences in body weight were observed among treatments. Mortality of chicks was less after seven days in those groups placed on feed and water immediately. At the end of the experiments, numerical differences still existed, but they were not significant. Feed consumption during the first few days after hatching tended to be higher for earlier hatched chicks and for those placed on feed earliest. No significant differences in feed consumption or feed efficiency were found among treatments for the entire brooding period.
