Patronage and enlightenment in pre-revolutionary Russia: Alfons Shanyavsky and his 'Free School'

Popis: The article is devoted to the history of establishment of the private university in pre-revolutionary Russia on the sponsorsʼs donations. Alfons L. Shanyavsky was the initiator of the creation of this university, he filed a petition for the opening of the Public University to the Moscow City Duma and to the Ministry of Education in 1905. After long resistance by the officials the University was opened in 1908, after the death of its founder. Public University was attractive for various audiences, as had a great opportunities to practice the science and the getting of high education in selected cycles and courses. For teaching at the university were attracted highly qualified specialists, who were able to unite around talented students. These students became ahead of Russian science after decades.
