[ABSTRACT] The environmental and socio-economic significance of mangroves has widely been recognized over the past few decades. The objective of this study is to identify and describe mangrove forests occurring along the coast of Pakistan for the preparation of a reliable and updated data base to contribute to the efforts being made for sustenance of the coastal ecosystem and resources. SPOT FCC images were analysed to identify the spatial distribution and relative density of the mangrove forests along the estuaries of major rivers. Mangroves and the major landforms were identified and mapped at several locations on various scales in order to meet the requirements of national user agencies. The study revealed mega changes in the distribution of mangroves and associated landforms on comparison with the existing information bases. |
