In the mobility landscape of Mongolia, reiteration seems to symmetrically characterise both movement and rituality. As ceremonies take place at customary sacred places time after time –thus becoming ritual-, so the local movement of humans and animals stratifies in the landscape, thanks to ‘ancestral’ spatial choices reproduced over time. This recurrent aspect can be ascribed to a performative system of knowledge that encompasses not only the realm of traditionally ritualised movement, such as circumambulation and pilgrimage, but also the periodical shifts of the local pastoral communities. In this paper, we aim to explore the material track and the potential chronological depth of recurrent mobility in the case study of the Ikh Bogd Uul Mountain, in Southern Mongolia. Through the information derived from the fieldwork and analysis of satellite images, we investigate the network of paths documented in the semi-desert, high-mountain area of the Gobi-Altai Mountains (ca. 6000 Km2). In particular, we analyse the living pastoral trails and ‘natural’ paths in relation to the Late Prehistoric funerary mounds that dominate the local monumental landscape. In this way, we would like to contribute to expanding our understanding of the reiterative aspects of the local mobility, as well as the identity-building and heritage-making values that are intertwined with persistent routes in the traditional cosmology.
