The present study evaluates the implementation of peer feedback in essay writing instruction as an effort to introduce more learner-centred activities in second language writing classrooms. More precisely, our aim is to research the effect of comments provided in an online peer feedback workshop on the quality of essay writing. This research should provide answers to the following research questions: 1. How reliable are students as peer reviewers? 2. What is the effect of peer feedback comments on essay improvement? A mixed- method research design is followed, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses to address the research questions. The study is conducted in both the real-life classroom setting and in an online workshop using an e-learning platform. The participants in the study are the first-year Humanities students enrolled in an EAP course. The results of the study point to a connection between the type of feedback provided in online peer- feedback workshop and improvement in subsequent essay writing. The study is in line with existing research on peer review practices which reports essay writing benefits when students are instructed to give constructive and elaborated peer feedback comments. |
