High psychosocial burden, including significant psychological and psychiatric disorders, is now well recognized in people suffering from psoriasis. Various psychological treatments have so far been investigated and shown to be useful for psoriasis, including cognitive behavior therapy or family therapy. Other treatments, such as meditation and meditation and mindfulness, are becoming increasingly popular as well, and show promising results in treating various stress related disorders and somatic illnesses. However, a systematic study of these treatments in patients with psoriasis has not been conducted so far. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the usefulness of meditation and mindfulness in psoriasis patients, regarding symptoms and accompanying psychological disorders, as well as to analyze the methodology and quality of these studies and to give recommendation for future research. Four scientific databases - MEDLINE, PsychInfo, CINAHL and SCOPUS, were searched in July 2020 for primary quantitative and qualitative studies. Ten studies were reviewed and their results and methodology narratively synthetized. The obtained results suggest that meditation and mindfulness have beneficial effects for psoriasis patients, which are similar to those of other psychological treatments. These include firstly, alleviating psychological disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and other psychopathological disorders, as well as help general adaptation and reactions to illness and symptoms. And secondly, meditation and mindfulness might also help alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis and improve dermatological quality of life, which may have important implications for treatment. However, these findings are often limited due to poor study quality and methodology which clearly indicate the need for future research. |
