Sustainable development is a concept that has been used in modern economic theory since the 1970s. Modern approaches to the concept point the need to achieve comparative objectives of economic growth, employment, environmental protection and risk prevention. The impact and challenges of globalization have affirmed the necessity of implementing this concept in all European and world development strategies, placing it as a key point of modern economic processes. This research aims to tackle relevant theoretical aspects and to analyse the current implementation of the sustainable development concept in the EU with specific indicators of sustainable development, and an overview of key programmes, initiatives and priorities. The purpose of the research is to determine crucial challenges and perspectives of the sustainable development concept implementation in the EU. The paper consists of six interconnected chapters. After the Introduction, the paper continues with a systematic presentation of key theoretical foundations of sustainable development, after which the research methodology and data are pointed out. The focal part of the paper includes an analysis of the current implementation of Sustainable Development Goals in the EU, based on secondary data collected from relevant European and international databases. The analysis enables the identification of crucial measures of sustainable development implementation in Europe, as well as challenges and perspectives for the future implementation of sustainable development. The concluding part gives a synthesis of key findings elaborated during the research. The research indicates positive tendencies in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at the EU level.
